Puppy FAQ

Q: How are your puppies raised?

A: Our puppies are whelped (born) in a 5’ x 8’ whelping box in our heated garage. We sleep with the mother beginning 2 days prior to her due date and stay with her until her puppies are born. We have necessary whelping supplies on hand to help during the birthing process if necessary. A heat lamp and/or heating pad is used to keep the puppies area at a regulated temperature. After all of the puppies have been born and are successfully nursing and doing well we give the puppies an abundance of love and attention. We continue to sleep close by at night to continue monitoring the mother and her babies. Within the first 4 days the puppies will be taken to the vet for their first check-up and to get their dewclaws removed.

During the puppies first few weeks we love to gently hold and snuggle each puppy.  The puppies get used to each family members touch and smell.  They are held as we cook, eat, fold clothes, watch TV, and do homework.  Not only are puppies loved by us, we also have several family members and our children’s friends come over to hold the puppies. They are often rocked, swaddled in a blanket, and held like a baby.  Our other dogs gently smell them.  Their bedding is washed and changed each day.

Beginning the third week each puppy is introduced to grooming. They are given warm baths, blow-dried, nails trimmed, ears cleaned, and the hair on the pads of their feet is trimmed if needed. The puppies are given several different toys to play with that have various textures and make different noises.  Now that their ears are open, they are able to experience common household noises such as the vacuum, shower running, washing machine, and people constantly talking to them. Now that they are more mobile they are given different textured surfaces to walk on such as concrete, tile, carpet, blankets, outdoor carpet, and synthetic grass.  Each puppy continues to be picked up, carried, and held on a daily basis.

By week four the puppies have a divider in their whelping area to separate their sleeping area from their potty area.  They will enjoy eating their first puppy food.  A few puppies at a time will be introduced to a crate for short periods of time.  The toys are often changed so they exposed to a wide variety of pet toys as well as infant toys.  Each puppy will be given worming medicine and may get another grooming session.

From the fifth through the seventh week the puppies will have the opportunity to visit a local school for socialization. Puppies will continue to work on potty training and will be allowed to go outside in the grass to follow their mother as an example. We will carefully play with each of them and hand feed them. Baths are given almost each week, depending on the time of year and how big of a mess they make when eating.  They will also be taken back to the vet to complete their first vaccinations and another dose of worming. The puppy’s will begin to hear simple commands such as sit, down, and potty. Each puppy will go in car rides to get used to the movement. When each puppy is eight weeks old they are able to go to their new home, but will always have a place in our hearts. We will continue to answer any questions you may have throughout the lifetime of your puppy and hope you stay in touch with us so we can watch them grow.

Q: Do you sell your puppies with breeding rights?

A: We primarily sell our puppies as pets only with a limited registration. This means you cannot use the dog to breed. However, you can participate in obedience, rally, agility, etc.  Your dog can also be trained as a therapy/service dog. Occasionally we will sell a show potential puppy with breeding rights to approved homes only.

Q: How do I reserve a puppy?

A: Call us!  This gives us a chance to get to know potential owners and it gives you a chance to get to know us as breeders. You will also be asked to complete a puppy application on our website.  We are more than happy to answer any questions you have.

Q:  Can I come to see the puppies?

A:  Yes, for those owners who are seriously interested in owning one of our gorgeous English Golden Retrievers we would love to meet you. You are more than welcome to come to our home and get to know the adult dogs as well as the puppies anytime. Please call us to set up an appointment.

Q:  Can I pick my puppy out?

We as breeders always have the first opportunity to pick any puppy we wish to keep. The remaining puppies will be picked in the order of when each deposit was received. We do not recommend choosing your puppy until they have reached about 6 weeks because personalities have just started to develop.  If you are not able to come to our home and personally pick out a puppy, call us and tell us what you are looking for in your new puppy. Because they live with us in our home, we know each puppies personality and temperament very well, and along with your input we can help match up a puppy to fit your needs. We will take several pictures of each puppy throughout the short time we have them so you can watch each of them grow and change.

Q:  What is the price of your puppies?

A: Our puppies are $1,800. This price includes vet checks, dewclaws removed, multiple wormings, first vaccinations, and a 24 month health guarantee on hips, elbows, heart, and eyes.  We take pride in our breeding program and spend extra to complete health clearances of the adults to ensure you are getting a healthy puppy.
